About us

Don Ricardo Is 74 years of age, a native of Sauce in the San Martin high jungle area of Peru, who started walking the path of vegetalismo at the age of 35 when he had an accident and seriously damaged his hip. He undertook a 6 month Bachuja diet, and eventually cured himself. Through the process of dieting, he also began to learn the secrets of Vegetalismo, and slowly became a curandero, learning how to take pulses to diagnose the common ailments of the time.

He studied with 3 different Banco Curanderos, including his grandfather, and is a specialist at treating snakebites, an event which used to be very dangerous before the arrival of modern medicine and antidotes.

He does not work with ayahuasca, preferring instead to use a variety of tree barks and plants, which he prepares in either aguadiente (sugar cane alcohol) or water.

Humble and modest, he is widely respected in the high jungle area of Sauce, and consulted on a daily basis from those in both his immediate community and beyond.

Don Ricardo joins us at La Medicina for some retreats to share his knowledge of plant medicine, and to diagnose illness from an amazonian shamanism perspective and how best to treat it.

In 2014 he agreed to teach Chris everything he knew about vegetalismo, and so Chris became his first ever student.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:
