About The Teacher
Nerissa is a Louisville, Kentucky based yoga teacher and studio owner who knows first hand the power of yoga. Almost 20 years ago, suffering from insomnia and depression, she walked into her first yoga class hoping for guidance and relief, and since that day she has never looked back. Practicing yoga regularly while traveling and living around the world throughout her 20’s and into her 30’s she suddenly found herself back stateside six years ago. She felt something special was happening when she walked into a class in Miami taught by Skanda Yoga Creator, Anand K F Von Roenn III, one of her first teachers in Louisville all those years ago. After years of dedicated, regular practice she was being called to teach, and Skanda Yoga was her path. With yoga’s increase in popularity and teacher trainings around every corner, she believed that teaching from the perspective of a long time student was not only important for the tradition but also essential. It was time to take her practice to the next level and teach. With a background in dance and a love for all things physical, yoga has always been her place of comfort. The combination of strength and flexibility required to practice yoga in both body and spirit are what has brought her to her mat year after year, decade after decade. Yoga has always been her anchor when the world has felt chaotic. It’s always been her place of peace. In her classes, you will be challenged. You’ll be asked to face your fears, and you’ll sometimes be uncomfortable. But you’ll always be supported and loved. Nerissa more than anything believes in the spirit of her students. She believes in laughing and never taking yourself too seriously and always facing your fears head-on. She will take the time to break-it-down and teach you arm balances and inversions that other teachers often just skim over during a flow. She’ll also give you time in class to work on new poses, no matter if you’re an advanced practitioner or if you’re starting from the beginning; you will be challenged to grow. If you want to learn arm balances and inversions in a safe setting then Nerissa and Skanda Yoga is just what you’re looking for in a yoga retreat. You’ll walk out of her classes feeling like you really got a chance to challenge your own boundaries. You’ll also build confidence and hopefully have a little more pep in your step. The rewards of yoga are easy to witness and Nerissa’s classes are no exception. Are her classes relaxing? Only in the way that when something is difficult it requires all of our attention, and so we can move out of our head and into our bodies and we feel relaxed and accomplished when we’re finished. Because let’s admit it, quieting the mind is the hardest challenge we face. Believing in ourselves and our dreams takes dedication and practice, and for yogis that all starts on the mat.
