About The Teacher
Imagine landing in paradise with a group of like-minded people, all there to do a full crash course in guitar and voice, in order to connect with that inner-musician that has been waiting to be rediscovered.
*Welcome to Pure Joy Music Camp for Adults.*
We believe that music is everybody’s birthright. Get ready to leave behind any doubts or insecurities you may be living with about your innate musical talent. The days of being forced as a child to go to music lessons and studying the depths of music theory have passed. At Pure Joy, we believe the secret to learning music as an adult is to focus on what brings joy and what feels fun, and to do this with other likeminded souls - in paradise.
WHAT TO EXPECT
You will be experiencing a five day course in learning all the techniques and tricks to help bring your guitar and voice game to the next level. No more blandly strumming out the same old guitar songs for your Auntie Marie, and no more fear of singing out of tune. At Pure Joy, you will be given all the tips and shortcuts that will help you IMMEDIATELY improve your music skills. Within an afternoon, you will be doing basic soloing and jamming with other students. You will also be shown how to start finding your true voice and how to easily transpose a song to match your vocal range.
Some people will be focusing on integrating various guitar techniques that help enrich the sound of a song, others will be mastering impromtu lead guitar riffs, and others will be discovering their lead vocal skills or learning to harmonize.
In the end, we all will be experiencing the fun of collaborating and learning methods for how to make performing a joyful experience, instead of some quest for perfection. Your little inner child will thank you.
Throughout the camp, students will be pairing off and being put into collaborative groups to put songs together with the end goal of building towards a final performance, whether it be at the beach campfire, in front of the group, or at the legendary Sanctuary Open Mic night.
Our home base for the camp will be the beautiful Zen Hall, a magical space in the jungle that provides the perfect spot for us to share this amazing experience and we couldn’t be happier to be hosted by The Sanctuary. You’ll understand when you see it…..
Kat – is a singer-songwriter and yoga teacher with a passion for helping people overcome their fears and discover – or rediscover – their voices. Classically trained with a Masters in Music Leadership from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Pure Joy. Having been on her own journey of musical healing, she can really empathize with people who are on theirs. Having taken a hiatus from music due to the cutthroat environment of music schools and the music industry, Kat eventually rediscovered her love of music and was overjoyed to discover the Sanctuary and meet other like-minded souls. Kat is releasing her first solo EP in December 2018 (for a sample – The River Dart) and has been hosting mantra singing circles, cacao ceremonies (Heart Fire Hub, Flowering Soul), and singing in kundalini yoga workshops at Triyoga, Camden.
Ryan – started studying guitar at the age of 11 and has been teaching guitar lessons himself for over 10 years. His specialties include teaching strumming and picking techniques that provide for a more enriched sound, as well as rebuilding song frameworks to create original versions of existing songs. Ryan believes that going up on stage is a transformational experience and every Thursday night at the Sanctuary Open Mic, Ryan has been helping people overcome their fear and take the leap. He has been hosting Open Mic nights at the Sanctuary for three years.
Chanin – is one of the managers of the Tea Temple, the alternative healing space at the Sanctuary. Those who have been to the Sanctuary before often will report sightings of Chanin jamming on the beach, playing 90’s tunes on the piano in the Tea Temple, or floating around the resort and sprinkling his joyful vibe. Born and raised in Bangkok, Chanin was put into classical guitar lessons when he was young but found that the restrictive learning approach did not suit his free spirit. He gave up the conventional approach to music, learning to play his favorite songs until he found his own voice. Chanin has an International Post-Graduate Medical training in Anthroposophic Medicine (IPMT) and runs a permaculture farm in the north east of Thailand.
