About the Teacher
Why study with them?
Julia (she/her) first learned about the Guild while working in the North Cascades. She joined the Guild community as director in April of 2022.
Julia believes in a Spirituality of relationship as a way of navigating through the world. From living in diverse contexts both internationally and domestically, Julia has developed a commitment to justice and a passion for social change.
Julia graduated with a BS in Economics from Gonzaga University, where she first experienced Ignatian Spirituality. As a volunteer through the ELCA's Young Adults in Global Mission program, she lived and worked in a Malay-speaking congregation of the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia where she pariticipated in a number of community programs, including teaching English classes and workshops. While living in the Twin Cities she worked at an after-school activity program and taught English Language Learners as part of the St. Joseph Worker Program. Later she worked for Bega Kwa Bega (Shoulder to Shoulder in Swahili) in Tanzania where she coordinated the relationship between the St. Paul Area Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and the Iringa Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania. As the most recent program manager of Holden Village, she believes in the possibility of the “in-between space” that allows for experimentation and reorientation.
Julia is the youngest of three, born in California, raised in Colorado, and formed between South East Asia and East Africa. When she’s not working, Julia loves to play outside and keeps her binoculars close at hand to spot a bird or two.
