About the Teacher
Why study with them?
Freia Groves (she/her) is a multi-disciplined artist and designer. Following her formal training in Tailoring and Fashion Design in London, she has spent the last 10 years exploring artisanal practices in East Africa. She has spent her time learning, co-creating, and collaborating with communities throughout East Africa, combining her knowledge of Western art and design with local and traditional African crafts.
She spent two years living in Zanzibar where she collaborated with Dominique Davant to create a brand called UZIMA. The brand’s base combined local, natural dyes with local traditional crafts to showcase Zanzibar’s rich heritage.
Using the knowledge Freia learnt from her experience in East Africa, she has now relocated to London, UK. She continues to explore the use of natural colour and traditional skills. Most recently she is involved in a farming co-op producing food for London, and learning more about medicinal plants.
