Haiku is the perfect form of writing to explore on a journey in Japan. We experienced travel by boat and train as well as on foot though ancient forests coated in autumn colours, staying in ryokan inns and monasteries dripping with atmosphere. In the company of like-minded people I listened to stories, learnt skills and shared the food and history of a vibrant culture. If you like travel and writing Jan’s journeys are the perfect combination. I’ve been attending Jan Cornall’s workshops and tours for over 10 years because they inspire me and keep me writing. There’s nothing like a deadline and Jan’s monthly workshops provide the stimulus to overcome doubt and put something onto that scary blank page. The creativity retreats she organises overseas provide the perfect combination of travel and writing. With like-minded artists, you share stories, learn skills, write and wonder at the culture you’re exploring. And when it’s all over there’s an online magazine to showcase your latest masterpiece that the trip has inspired. Jan’s techniques have developed over many years of teaching in colleges, university and private groups. This is augmented by her own writing practice and performance of songs, poems and stories. She uses meditation and visualisation techniques that awaken writing that surprises you. Her skillfully managed groups are informative and fun and you leave feeling more confident about your own writing as well as having enjoyed the stimulating company of other writers. Over time these writers get to know your project and provide valuable feedback and each year there is the opportunity to swap your draft mss with another writer for in-depth consideration. Jan exudes passion for art and people and her techniques aim to get the best out of writers. Whether it’s coloured pens and butcher’s paper or discussing the tried and true along with the latest ideas in writing craft, Jan’s deep-seated knowledge is combined with the positive critique of a nurturing mentor. She gets you over writing blocks and teaches you the resilience to stick at a project regardless of how long it takes.
