Steve Byers, PhD

Dr. Byers  is  on faculty with the Department of Psychology and Counseling at Northeastern State University in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. An enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Dr. Steven Byers received his B.S. as a dual major in Philosophy and Psychology at the University of Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma. He then attended the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan where he received his M.A. in Psychology with a concentration in Personality Assessment & Development. To complete his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology he attended the University of Colorado at Boulder. Throughout his academic training Dr. Byers has emphasized the need to engage and enhance a person's spirituality and related practices with psychological models of behavior, motives and psychology. This emphasis was carried into his academic work via engaging peers and clients and involves enhancing undergraduate and graduate education through his teaching at NSU. He emphasized the important of divestment and community research within diverse context. As a part of his emphasis on culture and diversity, Dr. Byers emphasizes the following domains through research and evaluation: diverse students experience in higher education, re-evaluation of mental health concepts in relation to culturally different persons and both individual and collective trauma’s relationship to stress and coping in marginalized groups, families and persons.  Finally, assessing and examining collective trauma and mental health through Narrative Theory and methodology is his current research foci.

Steve served as both board chair and co-director of the executive committee of the Osage Forest of Peace.
