About The Teacher
Daniel is an award-winning composer-lyricist for musical theatre, now based in Vancouver following ten years in New York. Honors include the Edward Kleban Prize (a $100,000 award given annually to “the most promising lyricist in American musical theatre”), and the ASCAP Foundation Cole Porter Award and Jonathan Larson Grant for music and lyrics. Musicals include The Longing and the Short of It, Middle School Mysteries, Hansel & Gretl & Heidi & Günter and the Kafka-inspired The Trouble With Doug (European premiere: Fredericia, Denmark, Spring 2017). His work has been presented on stages from the Kennedy Center (DC) to the Bay Area (Palo Alto, CA). Daniel has also led songwriting classes for underprivileged youth from Brooklyn to South Central Los Angeles. With his father Dr. Gabor Maté he has co-led workshops on parent-child dynamics in Vancouver and Edmonton, and is also the voice of Dr. Maté’s audiobooks. He received an Earphones Award from AudioFile Magazine for his narration of In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts. Daniel lives in East Vancouver with his wife Tanya.
