Maestra Sulmira is from the village of Natural de Marumashu – Padre Marces, in Loreto, Peru. This is one day from Pucallpa by boat.
Maestra Sulmira began her training as a Shipibo curandera when she was 19 with her father, Melquiades. She drank Ayahuasca with him then for her first time and directly started dieting and living one year of “pure medicine” – dedicating herself wholly to the plants.
It is common for Shipibo curandero traditions to be passed through family lineages, and along with herself, her father passed his healing knowledge to Sulmira’s sister, Celestina, and her brother, Jose.
After dieting for one year with her father, Maestra Sulmira began working alongside him as a curandera. They spent six months working together in Lima and then moved back home where they worked out of their house. Maestro Sulmira then went to work at Temple of the Way of Light in 2012, where she stayed for four years, guiding guests on their healing journeys and opening plant diets for staff members at the Temple.
Maestro Sulmira is now 42 years old and has been working as a curandera with Ayahuasca and the medicinal plants for 21 years.
