Kimber Kinley - Teacher / Coach

About The Teacher

Surfista & Yoga Teacher

Kimber Kinley is our Head Surf Coach, SSA Program Director and Yoga Teacher. She truly follows a creative rhythm and her journey is one of a maximum adventurer at heart. For the past 7 years, she has traveled the world as a free surfer, from California thru Central America, Peru, Chile, Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, most of Europe, and the list goes on and on, offering surf coaching as well as yoga classes and retreats along the way. She attained her ISA (International Surfing Association) Level 1 Certification in Costa Rica, and then went on to complete her ISA Level 2 Certification in Raglan, New Zealand. She has also participated in training at the High Performance Center in Casuarina, Australia, the first facility of its kind, built specifically for surfing and surf fitness, and has accordingly attained her lifeguard rescue training, CPR and First Aid.

Kimber also holds her 200 hour Vinyasa Yoga Certification from teacher and inspiration, Max Strom in 2007, as well as a 100 hour Yoga Therapeutics training from the highly regarded Yoga Tree in San Francisco. Due to in-depth studies with several yoga and spiritual teachers, she is able to offer a variety of methodologies, including hatha, vinyasa flow, restorative, yin, yoga nidra, post surf stretching, surf fitness, and ‘surf inspired’, her own developed breath and movement flow class, focusing on strength, response, balance, core stability, and endurance, all imperative for the performance and progression of a surfer. She had the fortune to participate in a workshop with BET (Breath Enhancement Training) owner Nam Baldwin, who trains freedivers and professional surfers such as Mick Fanning, providing her with knowledge to blend pranayama from a yogic perspective with breathing techniques for professional athletes.

She is a freelance writer, and studied journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and also enjoys reading, playing music (she was a professional drummer in a band for 7 years), snowboarding and skateboarding. Through an artistic expression of power, grace, strength and surrender, her adventurous spirit and continuous cultivation of happiness shines through her teachings, whether she is in the water teaching people how to surf, seated behind her beloved drumset, or on a yoga mat leading people through their practice. This girl knows how to live large, and charge! And she is super passionate about sharing the joys of life with everyone she meets along the way.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

My inspiration is to find some very much needed solace away from the stress of raising 4 children, working (as a dietitian) and trying to get my private nutrition counseling practice launched. I am a registered yoga instructor and have practiced for over 10 yrs, and have always dreamed of taking a yoga retreat just for my own inner well being. Linda

Retreat Guru's Vision

We believe human beings are innately wise, strong and kind. This wisdom, although not always experienced, is always present. Going on retreat is a beautiful way to reconnect to our basic sanity and health. Our aspiration at Retreat Guru is to inspire people to experience authentic retreats and reconnect with their innate wisdom, strength and kindness.
