About us

His Holiness Paramaguru  R. Sharath Jois was born into the lap of yoga itself as the son of renowned yoga teacher Her Holiness Saraswati Jois, daughter of revered Yogacharya Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. He was born into the house of yoga practitioners, on September 29, 1971, in Mysuru. Uner the guidance of his legendary grandfather and mother, he embraced yoga at the tender age of seven. Until he turned fourteen, he experimented various postures and styles of yoga. After grabbing a diploma in electronics from the esteemed University of JSS, Mysuru, he turned completely into the world of yoga.  Paramaguru R. Sharath Jois always knew that he would walk the paths of Ashtanga Yoga paved by his grandfather and mother. He started his formal education on yoga when he was 19. He is an exemplar of sheer perseverance and dedication. His day starts at three in the morning as he set out to the Lakshmipuram Yoga Shala established by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois to practice and then assist his guru.  Paramaguru R. Sharath Jois is the only disciple of Sri K.Pattabhi Jois’s to learn and practice the complete series of Ashtanga Yoga. Today he is the director of K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute and also a master there. He reaches the institute before the first student arrives and continues to maintain his discipline and dedication towards yoga. Thousands of his students testify that he is one of the best yoga teachers the world has ever seen. The International Festival of Yogic Heritage is an opportunity to meet and learn from Paramaguru R. Sharath Jois directly.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

Reconnecting with myself after a very crazy few months with a new baby! Just having that feeling of being grounded again. But also having an opportunity to connect with new amazing people. Getting exposed and Inspired by new (to me) yoga instructors (and community). Being in the presence of real, authentic and raw emotion (the whole spectrum).. So many reasons! Alyson
