Joyce Hostetter

About The Teacher

Joyce Hostetter’s historical novels have been applauded for their rich language, southern atmosphere, precise tone, and believable situations. Joyce knows how to capture the rich, complicated past.

Her middle grade novel Blue emerged directly from a Highlights workshop in which editor Carolyn Yoder sent participants digging for history in their own backyards. The story of a North Carolina polio epidemic, Blue is now part of Bakers Mountain Stories, a series with themes of adversity, friends, and family, set against the backdrop of WWII and the Cold War. Other books in the series include Aim, Comfort, and the forthcoming Drive (Fall 2018). In addition to winning numerous awards, Blue is used in classrooms across North Carolina.

Joyce speaks regularly in schools, civic clubs, writer’s groups, and library conferences; sharing what she’s learned about researching and writing historical fiction.

Good and bad, happy and sad, all thoughts vanish into emptiness, like the imprint of a bird in the sky. Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

It would my first vacation in the mountains. I think getting away and beginning a new routine would be good for me and a friend. Dianne
