Details of this retreat

When was the last time you spent four days somewhere real? Four days can shift more than you'd think. Long enough to feel the shape of a different rhythm, without a phone to hide behind or a schedule of your own to run. Practice at The Essence isn't about achieving a state or learning a technique. It's the ongoing act of noticing what's actually happening — in your mind, your body, the space around you — instead of running on the automatic patterns most people live inside without questioning.

THE PROGRAM
Awakening Awareness means practicing the muscle of watching your own reactions, beliefs, and patterns surface in real time, inside a community where everyone else is doing the same thing openly as a way of living. Set at the edge of the jungle outside Tulum, it's lived daily: morning practice, teaching, shared meals, rest, evening practice, Satsang. For four days, you live it too. No phone. No schedule of your own to manage.

Maybe you've read the books, tried the practices alone, and reached the edge of what you can see by yourself. Maybe there's a decision waiting — about your work, your relationship, your direction — and you need real distance to hear yourself think. Or maybe nothing's urgent. You're just curious what a different rhythm actually feels like. Whatever happens in four days, you'll leave knowing something you couldn't know from a website, book, or a podcast: either you got the taste you came for, or you're already asking how to stay longer.

The retreat experience:
You arrive, and the rhythm is already moving — you're stepping into a day that was happening before you got here and will keep happening after you leave. That's deliberate: you're watching real life at The Essence.

The rhythm:
Mornings open the same way they do for everyone here: stillness meditation at dawn, a teaching from Chi, movement to wake the body, breakfast together. From there, the day opens up — open community time, a shared juice and lunch, siesta, evening Qigong, Satsang to close the day.

Four days won't change you. That's not what this is for. This is your chance to see, firsthand, whether this way of living — the structure, the practice, Chi's teachings and presence, the people — is somewhere you actually want to go deeper. Some guests leave with exactly what they came for: a real taste, real clarity, and a small shift they carry back into their own life. Others feel something starts here they aren't ready to leave, and choose to stay on for the full 30-day Human Greenhouse program.

If you feel moved to lend a hand in the kitchen or the garden, you're welcome to. But nothing is asked of you — you're here to decide if this community is aligned with you. Spend four days of real rest from your own noise — space to think clearly, distance from the pace you've gotten used to, contact with people living intentionally instead of by default. This is the beginning of a process to sit and be aware of your own mind. It's an honest look at a place and a way of living, so you know — not guess — whether it's for you.

Who this is for:
Come, if:

You can step away for four days and be fully present, phone aside
You're not looking for a resort-style experience
You're curious about community life but not ready to commit a month

What makes this retreat special
Most programs teach you something. This one works differently. It removes what's in the way. What makes this genuinely different is Chi's direct presence throughout your stay, held inside real community life. He won't go easy on you — he's direct, he challenges what you're most certain of, and he brings you to edges you'd never reach alone, while walking every step of it beside you.

You'll have a dedicated 30-minute one-on-one session with him during your stay and day-to-day access whenever a question, challenge, or doubt comes up. What he offers isn't advice — it's a direct mirror for what you're too close to see yourself: your justifications, your blind spots, the way you see yourself and others. Most people go years without being looked at that closely. Here, it's the whole point.

The daily structure is consistent and intentional. There is no free scheduling, no optional sessions. The container is held.
Practices included:
Stillness meditation using breath, body and mind awareness
Self-inquiry methods
Daily talks on self-awareness
Daily Qigong
Awakened body movement: pranayama, energy-centered movement, or yoga, selected based on group and individual capacity
Teachings on the nature of the mind
Intermittent fasting: 19 hours daily (14:30 - 09:30)
Nourishing vegan and gluten-free meals, low in sugar
Simple conscious living practices applicable to everyday life

Retreat benefits:
An introduction to a daily rhythm that will support you once you get back home
Community experience — living, serving, and practicing alongside others doing the same work
A firsthand experience of a different way of living, and a real sense of whether it's aligned with you in case you want to stay longer

The stay:
Day 1 — Arrival and settling
Arrive between 11:00 and 14:00. Settle in, meet the community, join the evening rhythm — Qigong and satsang — without needing to understand it all yet.

Days 2 and 3 — Full Immersion
The complete daily rhythm, start to finish. Sit in on the morning teaching. Move through the day at the community's pace, not your own. Join what draws you — a conversation, a task, a silence.

Day 4 — Departure
A final morning practice and breakfast together, then the program closes at 10:00. If something in you wants to stay, this is also the moment to talk about what continuing into the 30-day Human Greenhouse would look like.

Directions

--Getting to The Essence--
The retreat is located in Macario Gómez, a small town on the edge of the jungle outside Tulum, Mexico.
The closest airport is Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport — also known as Tulum International Airport (TQO) — in Tulum, Mexico, approximately one hour by car. Cancún International Airport (CUN) in Cancún, Mexico is one hour and fifty minutes away and offers significantly more international flight connections. For most guests, Cancún will be the practical choice.

--Arrival--
Please plan to arrive by 2:00 PM on your start day. You're welcome from 11:00 AM to settle in before the program begins. If a 2:00 PM arrival isn't possible for any reason, please arrive the evening before and stay in the area — there are good options nearby. Arriving rested and on time is part of entering this properly.

--From the Airport--
The most straightforward option is a private taxi transfer booked in advance. We recommend airportstaxitransfers.com — they use Google Maps and will get you directly to our door without hassle. Simply enter your destination as The Essence Community & Retreat Center and you're set.
If you arrange your own driver, use that same exact name when sharing the location, and make sure it's saved on your phone before you go. Not all drivers use Google Maps, and we've had guests end up at the wrong location when the address wasn't precise. The exact name is what gets you here reliably.
If budget is a consideration, take an ADO bus from Cancún Airport (CUN) or Tulum Airport (TQO) to Tulum center, then a short taxi or colectivo to Macario Gómez.

--Before You Leave Home--
Activate mobile data before you travel. You'll want to be reachable during the journey, and reliable Wi-Fi on the road isn't guaranteed. Straightforward to sort in advance — don't leave it for the airport.
