About this Retreat
Founder of Soulhike and guide Elsebeth Molberg Thing grew up in Greenland with the mountains as her playground. After a career in teaching and learning theory, she founded Soulhike to share her joy of nature with others. With Soulhike, she now works with how nature teaches us to deeper learnings in the wild of Sweden and Iceland.
The nature of Greenland shaped her more than school did. As a child she ran off every afternoon after school to play in the mountains. Here she developed a close relationship with Arctic nature. School led her further into society, to literature and a life of teaching, while her heart continued to long for the mountains of hrt childhood. When she moved to Iceland in 2020, she experienced a country she never wanted to leave. A nature that brought her back to herself and into deeper connection with the nature that has shaped us all. In 2024, she decided to leave her academic career in favor of a life in and with nature and founded Soulhike. Her mission is now to support others towards a deeper connection to nature through hiking.

Details of this retreat
The Icelandic highlands represent one of the few remaining true wilderness in Europe. Experiencing the profound silence here is a rare luxury. On the "Into The Wild Highlands" hiking retreat, we trek far from civilization and even from other hikers. In the highlands, you will discover a raw, cleansing atmosphere and a wild beauty that words can scarcely capture. It’s an experience that must be felt.
The hiking trail is named Strútstigur, after the distinctive mountain, Strútur. Our route traverses the renowned Eldgjá crater, located in Iceland's most active volcanic area, which also encompasses the famous Laugavegur hiking path. Over our four days of hiking, the diversity of natural experiences is vast.
On the first day, we set off in our private trekking bus from Reykjavík, passing through South Iceland and making a stop in the charming town of Vík in Mýrdal. From there, we distance ourselves from civilization, driving across the South Icelandic highlands to Hólaskjól. After a brief hike, we reach our cabin by the Alftavötn lakes.
On the second day, we embark on a hike into the highlands to Strútskali, taking a break to enjoy a swim in the natural geothermal pool, Strutlaug. We stay in Strútskali on the third day, where we have the option to either climb Strútur or explore the vibrant rhyolitic volcanic region at Törfajökull. On our final day, we cross the expansive desert moraine landscapes of Mælifellssandur alongside Myrdalsjökull, eventually reaching Hvangill, where our bus will pick us up for the journey back to Reykjavík.
Into the Wild Highlands offers a hiking experience emphasizing a mindful approach to the journey as a personal process. We hike with awareness, focusing on our surroundings, our bodies, and one another. Participants should be ready to embrace times of silence and mindful walking and adhere to this framework. This quietness will enhance your experience and create lasting memories. We take time for tranquility and outdoor writing in our notebooks, along with daily group discussions, allowing you to share your reflections and insights from the hike within a small group.
We must also prepare for the unpredictable Icelandic weather, which can be both enchanting and extreme. We should be ready for storms, strong winds, cold temperatures, and thick fog. Proper packing and preparation for this trip are crucial. Accompanying you are our mentally and physically resilient Soulhike guides, who will establish the trip's framework while ensuring guidance, safety, logistics, and meals are well-managed.
