Vishuddha Nath, Advaita teacher
Biographical sketch:
Vishuddha Nath was born in Oslo, Norway. He was brought by his parents to meet their Guru Swami Shyam in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, when he was 12. After completing high school, he moved to Kullu and studied with Swami Shyam for the following 12 years. The daily Satsang program at the ashram focused on Self-realization: understanding one’s true identity as the Self, the immortal and blissful being.
University education:
After his studies with his Guru, Vishuddha Nath raised a family in Norway and also completed his Sanskrit and Indian philosophy studies at the University of Oslo, and earned the Master of Philosophy degree with the thesis “Cetovimutti or Mind Liberation in Early Buddhism”.
He was also awarded an honorary Master of Meditation degree by the Vishva Unnyayan Samsad in Kullu.
Skills:
After having been trained as a Satsang leader and meditation teacher by Swami Shyam, Vishuddha Nath guides meditations and holds talks on Indian philosophy. He is a speaker at various yoga festivals and yoga schools in their teacher training programs across the world. He is a founding member of the Sanskrit chanting group Pranav Dhvani or Voice of the Absolute, which performs Sanskrit chants.
As a translator, V.N. has translated the Bhagavad Gita and the Avadhuta Gita into Norwegian, and is currently working on both a German and an English translation of the Bhagavad Gita. His fields of interest are: The philosophy of yoga in the Gita such as karma yoga, sankhya yoga and bhakti yoga, the classical yoga philosophy of Patanjali, the teachings of the Upanishads, the Advaita Vedanta of Gaudapada and Shankaracharya, as well as Early Buddhism and Mahayana. His favorite topic is to talk about his Guru’s awareness, the true Self, and share his insights into how to live the life of a yogi, to follow the path of sattva or purity, to meet the challenges as one practices sadhana, and how to live in freedom and joy.
He has also written the book Reaching Nirvana: A Guide to Meditation and Mindfulness (available on Amazon).
Vishuddha Nath is also a pujari, and conducts havans or fire sacrifices as a ritual to reset, to purify, initiate and bless.
