Details of this retreat

For over 12 years we've been leading our special yoga retreats in beautiful and exotic locations where you can explore new ways to connect with yourself and nature. Get inspired through unique vinyasa flows and yin yoga practices, which are often accompanied by live hang music. You’ll be encouraged to surrender and breathe deeper, celebrating the experience of stillness and a new sense of vibrancy within yourself.

PUERTO JIMENEZ, OSA PENINSULA

Go off the beaten path to a place where your alarm clock is the call of a playful howler monkey, your lullaby, cicada song carried on the Pacific breeze, where the mangoes are sweeter than honey, scarlet macaws more common than pigeons and where, when it comes to your yoga practice and wellness, there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach.

RECONNECT WITH NATURE

Nereus retreat center promises a sublime setting for your yoga retreat where the rainforest meets the ocean. Located in Costa Rica’s famous Osa Peninsula – a region described by National Geographic as one of the most “biologically intense” places on the planet – the area is bookended by the deep blue waters of the Pacific to the west and the Golfo Dulce, or “Sweet Gulf”, to the east. While the Osa comprises only 3 per cent of Costa Rica’s total land area, it is home to more than 50 per cent of the country’s animal and plant species.

Our retreat center is located just outside Puerto Jiménez, a historic gold mining and logging community, and one of two major gateways to the the awe-inspiring, 425sq km Corcovado National Park – picture a biodiverse Eden home to some 140 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, 116 species of reptiles and amphibians, 40 species of fish, four species of sea turtles and more than 500 species of trees.

Spend local days out exploring the peninsula’s spectacular beaches, snorkeling in calm coves, turtle-, dolphin- or whale-watching, kayaking through lush mangroves, before heading back to our gardens to, perhaps, swing lazily on a hammock while watching, through one eye, a squirrel monkey leaping to land on a branch overhead.

THE FOOD

At Nereus food isn’t just fuel, it’s a feature in your immersive experience with us. Just like we believe one size does not fit all in yoga practices, food is an individualized experience with the aim of supporting our students to feel their best.

Our produce is seasonal and sourced locally from independent businesses, from the organic rice grown in-country to the mahi mahi caught just along the beach.

DAILY ACTIVITIES

Each morning, enjoy a dynamic vinyasa flow practice with Dagmar. In the evenings, enjoy Daniel playing the Hang instrument live, while practicing a slow flow or yin with Dagmar. The yoga will help you to surrender and relax deeper into your breath and body. You will flow effortlessly through your practice.

The practices are open to all levels. Meditation and Pranayama are introduced and deepened as well.

We invite you to a 'Food As Medicine' nutrition workshop with our host Jen Millar, as well as a sunset kayak excursion.

Extra activities like massages, beauty treatments, professionally led walks and excursions, horse back riding, and more can be arranged for you on-site at additional cost.

We recommend adding a couple extra days to explore the famous Corcovado National Park and will be happy to recommend good guides.

NUTRITION WORKSHOP WITH JEN MILLAR

What does ‘food as medicine’ really mean and how can I apply this in my daily life?

These days we hear the term ‘food as medicine’ in reference to health supportive eating, but what does that really mean? Whether we credit this concept to Hippocrates, the ancient Ayurvedic medical texts, or modern day Functional Medicine, it is the belief that diet is integral in supporting health as well as preventing and curing disease.

After this workshop you will be able to:

Describe what ‘food as medicine’ means.
Understand how to apply this concept to support your own health through diet.

The workshop includes a discussion and opportunity to ask questions in order to optimize your own diet.

Directions

By air…

Sansa Airlines
www.flysansa.com for details and to make a reservation.

Once you check in at the Domestic Terminal for Juan Santa María airport (SJO), within two hours you could be standing on our beach. Sansa is the principal national airline, flying to 13 locations in Costa Rica. They operate Cessna Caravan airplanes with capacity up to fifteen passengers.

The flight to Puerto Jiménez (PJM) is only 40 minutes long and will take you over the mountains in the central valley and along the Pacific coast, cruising over the “Whale’s Tail” near Uvita, the Sierpe River Delta and the Gulfo Dulce. It’s a wonderful opportunity for some jaw-dropping photos.

Once you land in Puerto Jiménez it’s a quick transfer of approximately 5 km to Nereus Retreats.

By road …

Shared taxi-van shuttles can be arranged and are about $450/one way. Capacity depends upon the driver's vehicle and how much luggage.

Waze is the most commonly used navigational app in Costa Rica. Google Maps is also a reliable tool. Search for “Hotel Nereus, Puerto Jiménez”. The apps may offer you a variety of routes but our best advice is to take highway #27 (autopista) west, before heading south on #34 over Río Tarcoles, where you can stop and see crocodiles from the bridge, and then highway #2 before turning right onto road #245 to Puerto Jiménez. All the roads, until the last few kilometers are paved and in very good condition. The last 5 kilometers are on a flat, municipality-maintained dirt/gravel road. Overall the journey takes in the region of six hours, but it’s a wonderful opportunity to take in the Pacific coast, palm plantations, and jungle. You would have a partiuclarly memorable experience if you chose to do the journey over a couple of days and stop off at the National Park of Manuel Antonio or hike to the Nauyaca Waterfalls.

The only time to depart from the instructions that Waze or Google Maps gives you is when you are in the last kilometer of your journey. Continue past the entrance for Iguana lodge and ignore the right-turn to Agua Dulce Resort and the beach. Follow the road until the end, where you will find Nereus Retreats.

Magical and transformative
I completed my 200hr YTT at Nereus recently, and my experience was magical. Nereus is in a beautiful location (monkeys, macaws, beach to yourself, lush jungle vegetation), and you can feel the transformative energy as soon as you step on the grounds. My nervous system settled immediately. Jen and Stu are such kind and welcoming people, and their hospitality is unparalleled. You can tell that everything about the place (physically and energetically) is thought out and intentional. The food is amazing, healthy, and prepared with love. I learned so much from all of the teachers (Michelle, Jesse, and Jen) and had the health reset that I really needed. I can't recommend going to Nereus for YTT or a retreat enough.

Paradise in the Jungle
Nereus was incredible. The owners are amazing and one has professional culinary experience. The menu was amazing and healthy. The rooms are huge and very well appointed. I also loved the yoga studio which was brand new. You are steps from your own private beach and drinking from cocunuts you pick and seeing all the different monkeys that roam the trees was wonderful. It was a perfect getaway,

Awesome thank you.
Jen and Stuart and the community are so friendly. I had an amazing retreat. The course was great and the venue really special.
The venue is really pretty remote yet with the luxury accommodation, the warmth of the hosts and delicious healthy food, we were so well cared for.
Thank you.

200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training (YTT): May 2024
Simply put: this was life-changing. The entire experience from start to finish was pure magic. Nereus is by far the most outstanding Retreat Centre, where the beach meets the beautiful jungle. You are immersed in nature amongst the wildlife (monkeys everyday) and fed the most wholesome, nutritious food you could ever dream of. The accommodations are so warm & welcoming, there is literally nothing to worry about. The YTT teachers (we had Michelle, Elise & Jen) were the most dynamic trio. We received such a thorough, comprehensive, engaging & inviting training program. I feel so knowledgeable, prepared & excited to share everything I've learned. Even if you don't plan on teaching, this 200-Hour training is really meant for anyone. You will gain so much awareness and insight into your own practice, your own habits & evolve beyond your wildest dreams. Every single person there, whether it was my fellow trainees, the staff, the teachers...they were all next level incredible. They will become like family to you. I cannot express my gratitude enough that I found Nereus and for everything that it has given me. It was transformational. Highly recommend any of the retreats that Nereus offers. This review comes from the bottom of my heart so that I can hopefully encourage others to experience the magic too, just like I did. I absolutely will be back.

Live your best yoga life at Nereus Retreats!
Keen attention to all the little details is what this new yoga retreat centre is all about. The care and consideration shows up in everything the team does to make your stay into an outstanding experience.

Nereus provides you with three amazing gluten free and super tasty meals every day, made from scratch and with so much love and care.

The grounds are peaceful, immaculate and well-tended - and located only moments from the crashing waves of the ocean and miles upon miles of beachfront sunrises.

The yoga shala is top rate - open to the beautiful surrounding jungle sounds but protected from the elements. It is a treat in itself.

And the yoga training and practices are just beyond exceptional. Michelle is incredibly talented and her love of the craft of yoga shines through all she does. She is the perfect compliment to the ownership team of Jen and Stuart. These three are making magic together.

Do yourself a favour and make the trek to the Osa Peninsula to deepen your practice and wrap yourself in the bliss and joy that is Nereus Retreats!
