About this Retreat

Details of this retreat

As a travel agency Wari Tours is very aware of our unique position as a bridge connecting two cultures, where mostly foreign visitors meet the beautiful ancestral Andean traditions and people. We have also realized the opportunities this position brings to address a pressing issue present in the Cusco area, which is that of gender inequality.
Girls and women here suffer from more discrimination and violence, as well as having reduced access to education, health care, fairly remunerated work and representation in politics. With all this in mind, we decided to take action ourselves by designing a program to make a small contribution to combating the issue of unequal income for women, which we called “Walking with the Warmi Warriors”.
Below you’ll find an outline of the international and national frameworks within which the issue of gender inequality is being addressed, followed by more details of the program and a link to a wonderful blog post written by a tourist that has already taken part in the “Walking with the Warmi Warriors” program.

Schedule

ITINERARY:
Day 1: Sacred Valley - Maras - Moray
This action-packed tour of the Sacred Valley starts when we pick you up at your hotel in Cusco to head to the archaeological complex of Pisac. This is an awe-inspiring Inca fortress perched at the top of a mountain. After we finish exploring the complex and its Inca tombs, we will have a little bit of time to explore the handicraft market in the village of Pisac, a fiesta of colors where you’ll be able to take home a little bit of the Andes with you in the shape of weaving, jewelry, and many other crafts. Then, we head over to Urubamba for a delicious, healthy lunch. After lunch, we’ll head over to the enormous concentrical terraces that make up the Moray archaeological complex. It is believed that this was a sort of agricultural laboratory where the Incas experimented with how different crops grew at slight altitude intervals. It’s a short ride over to the incredible salt mines of Maras, a collection of hundreds of small pools spilling down a mountain gorge, filled with perhaps only a foot of water from a hypersaline stream. The salt mine is being run by a cooperative of locals who collect the salt in much the same way they have for hundreds of years. The day isn’t over yet, because from here we’ll head over to the living Inca city of Ollantaytambo for a visit.
Day 2: Urubamba- Socma Village - Perolniyoc Waterfall - Rayan
We’ll start our exciting journey today as we collect you from your hotel early in the morning. We’ll travel for an hour and a half to the starting point of our trek (3,000 m / 9,843). You’ll find our transport extremely comfortable and be able to use the cozy blankets we provide to catch a little more sleep on the drive if you need to. Before we set off, we’ll enjoy a bit of breakfast and meet our cooks and horsemen who’ll accompany us along the trek. Our hike starts with 3 hours to the Perolniyoc waterfall. On the way, you’ll spot corn, wheat, and quinoa fields all around you. Once we get to the falls, you’ll have the opportunity to cool off in the falling water or stay on the side and capture some amazing shots. After another hour of walking, we’ll get to the Inca Archaeological site of Racaypata, which was constructed on the side of a cliff and boasts amazing views of the surrounding valley. Every one of our guides is an expert in the Inca's history, so you can expect a wonderful history lesson and learn all about the culture. We’ll also enjoy our first lunch there, and you can try the great food our chefs prepare in the middle of the mountains. In the afternoon, we’ll descend for about an hour to our campsite in Rayan (3,700 m / 12,139). The clear nights in the middle of the Andes are astounding. As you wait for dinner to be served, you can rest your legs and look up at the beautiful constellations and shooting stars. After another tasty meal, you’ll be able to head to your comfortable tent for a good night’s rest.

Day 3: Rayan – Rainbow Pass – Ancascocha Valley
When you travel with us, you don’t need to worry about setting your alarm clock. We always wake you up with a warm cup of hot tea or coffee. Then, you’ll head to enjoy breakfast with the rest of the group before setting off for the day. This morning, we’ll go uphill for about 2 hours to the Rainbow Pass (4,500 m / 14,764) and enjoy some more wonderful views along the way. You can expect to see cultivation fields, alpacas, sheep, and if you’re lucky, even the flight of a condor with the perfect backdrop of Andean snowy mountains behind. You don’t need to rush to get to the top. It’s not a race, and remember that you’ll be at a high altitude, so slow and steady is always the best way to go. We’ll take a break and enjoy spectacular views of the Chancachuco Valley and the Sacred Valley of the Incas. You’ll then need to continue for another hour to get to our lunch spot (4,350 m / 14,272), where our chefs will be waiting with another incredible feast. This afternoon, we’ll continue ascending to enjoy some more astounding landscapes and stunning views of La Veronica glacier (5,682 m / 18,642). We’ll then begin a well-welcomed descent for 4 hours that’ll take us to the Ancascocha community (3,900 m / 12,795), which is where the trek is named. Our camp is located in a truly stunning location in a beautiful valley with a crystal clear stream running through the middle. Spend the evening unwinding after a long day of hiking and enjoying a tasty meal before settling in for the night in your tent.

Day 4: Ancascocha - Camicancha - Ollantaytambo
We’ll wake you up with a warm cup of tea or coffee, followed by breakfast. Now it’s time for what is likely the spiritual highlight of the trek: we’ll descend to the river itself to participate in a ceremony with the sacred water from the glacier. After this deep moment of connection to the pure water, we’ll continue to descend the Ancascocha Valley, probably meeting local inhabitants and their herds of alpacas on the way. The next part of the hike takes us through a spellbinding cloud forest dotted with delicate orchids and other flowers and vegetation until reaching the Ancascocha River, which we’ll cross to reach the village of Camicancha. This is where we’ll have our last lunch in the mountains and say goodbye to the full hiking team. A private van will pick us up to transfer us to the village of Ollantaytambo, a very quaint town in the Sacred Valley.
Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, we’ll take you to your comfortable room, where you can enjoy a hot shower and relax until dinner. Alternatively, and if you still have energy, you can explore the small town. We’ll meet for dinner in a top-quality restaurant and chat about tomorrow before heading to our rooms early to get some rest. We’ll need to be up bright and early in the morning to explore Machu Picchu!
Day 5: Ollantaytambo - Machu Picchu - Cusco
After tucking into an early but hearty breakfast at your hotel, we’ll catch the train to Aguas Calientes, We´ll travel for an hour and a half on a scenic train. we’ll jump on the bus up to the impressive Inca citadel, a journey that takes about 25 minutes. A 3-hour guided tour accompanied by the crisp early morning sun, is an excellent time to set off because the big crowds will come a few hours later. The guide will take you through and tell you everything there is to know about the different parts of this important Inca citadel, including the housing quarters, the astrological observatory with its renowned sundial, the Temple of the Condors, the cemeteries, and the quarry. If you have reserved the Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain ticket, you can go up there at around 9 am. It’s a fascinating and challenging hike, not for the faint of heart.
After our tour finishes and you’ve given thanks for this amazing place, we’ll take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes to have lunch. In the afternoon, you will get back on the bus and head to Aguas Calientes town. You will then board the train back to Ollantaytambo, where a private van will be waiting for your ride back to Cusco, arriving between 6-8 pm.
