Troy

Troy Valencia is the co-founder of Root & Wisdom, along with his partner and wife Joaly. He is a modern-day Indigenous scholar-practitioner and respected teacher in the fields of Soteriology and Spirituality. Deeply rooted in his paternal Central African heritage, Troy is a twice-initiated member of the Bwiti tradition and a sacred medicine carrier of Iboga. Overcoming the challenges of being raised in the foster care system, he earned a collegiate basketball scholarship, majored in Biology and Chemistry, and furthered his education with a graduate degree in Analytical Chemistry. His deep passion for the human experience led him to attain a second Master’s in East-West Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (PsyD). Troy has a unique gift for connecting complex scientific principles with profound spiritual truths, drawing from his deep understanding of Eastern and Indigenous wisdom traditions. He sees Iboga not just as a psychedelic or plant medicine but as a Spiritual Technology that provides a bridge between the physical/emotional and spiritual realms. Rather than merely seeking healing, Troy guides others towards lasting liberation from suffering. In addition to his work in spirituality, Troy has self-produced two internationally recognized albums, Sounds of Medicine and Planetary Attunement, available on all streaming platforms. Jo

Joaly Trinidad, affectionately known as Jo, is a co-founder of Root & Wisdom and founder of Artesana Healing with a rich educational background and deep ancestral roots. Holding an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Media and a Master’s degree in Counseling from NYU, Jo integrates modern academia with the indigenous practices of her Taino lineage. As the great-granddaughter of native touch healers, she blends ancient wisdom with contemporary, research-based methods. Certified as a somatic breathworker, vibrational entrainment healer, yoga instructor, and Kambo provider, Jo brings over four years of experience as a lead facilitator in Iboga ceremonies. Her Afro-Caribbean heritage, rooted in West/Central Africa, fuels her deep connection to Iboga and her commitment to its service. As a Bwiti initiate into the Mabundi Missoko lineage, Jo dedicates her life to preserving indigenous wisdom traditions and fostering empowerment through her non-profit organization Sacred Roots Foundation, dedicated ensuring these practices thrive for generations to come.

A phenomenal week

Troy and Joaly along with the rest of the team were amazing to work with. The retreat was an excellent opportunity to slow down, unplug and explore self-inquiry. The property is beautiful. The amenities are wonderful. The ceremonies were awesome. The massages and body treatments were simply amazing. I left the week feeling like I had just spent a week at the spa. As I now sit in stillness after the retreat I reflect on how grateful I am for having had this experience. Highly recommend!

Life changing experience

I went into root and wisdom with an open heart but a heavy one. I was suffering from clinical depression, feeling hopeless, and no real passion for life. I spent 7 days total and by day 2/3 I felt like a completely different person. This retreat has changed my life. Changed my view on life, and how I view myself. I will forever be grateful I was introduced to iboga as well as Joaly & Troy. I now feel hopeful for my future as well as in control. What a blessing this was, it was so dark and now I feel as though I am the light.

My time at Roots and Wisdom was an unforgettable one. Words can't really express or do justice the incredible work and support the whole team provide to curate a truly beautiful experience that nourishes the soul and clears the mind. The wisdom and power of iboga is one that can only be understood through experience. The respect and understanding of its use is shown with great wisdom by Troy and Joaly who have paid homage to its ancestral indigenous roots authentically and with the deepest of reverence. The support from the rest of the team with Ryan, Amelia, Bryan and Zaida made the experience even more special as they welcomed us with open arms and provided so much warmth and support and incredible holistic treatments that created a space of safety, family and ultimate relaxation. I consider the experience here one of my most important during my growth and evolution spiritually and couldn't recommend them more to those who are seeking their experience with iboga. I will always feel deep gratitude for the experience and for everyone on the team that allowed me to feel my most vulnerable with compassion and safety. Beautiful people, stunning landscape, a powerful plant and an enlightening experience felt from within.
