About the Teacher

Why study with them?

Our facilitator, Kim Kupferer, is an accomplished horse woman and Equine Facilitator. Kim has led transformative well-being and empowerment retreats in Equine Facilitated Experiential Learning (EFEL) for Women at her Imagine Equus Farm in Columbus, NC since 2017. All of the retreats Kim leads are Experiential in nature. The focus is on learning by doing & experiencing rather than just being talked at. Kim teaches in an authentic fashion with a mindset of positivity, empowerment and harmony. Kim’s unique connection with her own herd of horses, miniature donkeys and others allows her to smoothly work in conjunction with them as the equines teach retreat participants how to live a more harmonious life .

Kim has always been a lover of horses. She started her riding career at 6 months old thanks to her loving grandparents who frequently took her to a local stable. That love of horses continued her entire life leading to her getting her own horse Brownie in 2007. Kim initially trained at an eventing barn in CA. Right away she started attending clinics, lectures and seminars all around the country looking for a horse trainer or person, who was about connection over ego and force. After moving to North Carolina and starting her own horse farm in 2011, Kim began appreciating her horses at an even deeper level. Instead of it always being about what her equines could do for her as far as riding them, she began to learn connection with them, out of the saddle. That exploration of horses at a deeper level led Kim to discovering EFEL. Soon thereafter in 2016, she started an intensive mentorship program in EFEL with renowned teacher Barbara Alexander of Epona Ridge. Kim had the rare treat of doing a one on one mentorship with Barbara over the course of 2 years. She completed her certification as a Facilitator for Equine Experiential Learning in 2018. In addition to her certification program with Barbara, Kim has also traveled the country and world attending workshops and seminars learning from the best liberty and EFEL facilitators including Cavalia creator Frederic Pignon and a long list of facilitators at Shelley Rosenberg’s International Equine Summit. In 2022, Kim was a presenter at the International Equine Summit in Tuscon, AZ. A natural teacher, speaker and coach, Kim has easily transitioned into the position of Equine Facilitator and Equine Assisted Life Coach.

In addition to her horse background, Kim has a 30 plus year history of studying and participating in Mindfulness practices, Meditation, Walking Meditations, Kum Nye Movement Yoga, Heart & Breath work, Tibetian Buddhist studies and with spiritual leaders like Thich Nhat Hahn & Pema Chodrin. Kim incorporates many spiritual & grounding practices she has learned over the years into her retreats.

Prior to her EFEL work, Kim was an outstanding attorney in California who worked as a criminal defense trial attorney for over 34 years. She worked as an Alameda County Public Defender for 15 years, leaving as a Senior Supervisor. She then went into private practice in 2003 doing trial work with a focus on complex and death penalty cases until she stopped doing trial work in 2021. She also served in leadership roles as the Chair of the State Bar of California Criminal Law Executive Committee, being the Chair of Women Defender’s and teaching other lawyers around the state. Kim is still a licensed attorney with that focus now being on supporting and empowering other attorneys through the retreat work with the horses. What makes our retreats one-of- a-kind for our attorney groups is that our facilitator knows and understands the immense pressure and stress that comes with being an attorney and so is able to create retreats designed specifically to address attorney well-being and paths of empowerment.

Kim’s dream for Imagine Equus Farm has been to provide a place where people who are always giving to, and doing for others could come for a respite and to experience peace away from the rest of the world. With the addition of the retreats, as Kim has developed her own style of facilitation, she is very passionate about each woman who comes feeling taken care of and in a place they can relax, focus just on themselves and manifest their dreams. Kim keeps retreat groups very small so that each participant can have their own path of growth whether it be grounding & mindfulness to make one a better trial lawyer or creating present focus to let go of habits that hold one back from fully and joyfully experiencing life.
