Nai’m went on to study at the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA) obtaining his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree in 2002. After fulfilling his commitments for his medical internship at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (2002) and community service at the Pretoria Academic Hospital (2003), he undertook speciality training in psychiatry at Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital linked academically to the University of Pretoria. In 2008 Nai’m was admitted by the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa as a Fellow of the College of Psychiatrists (FCPsych) and received the MS Bell award for the best Registrar research presentation: Profile of mortality of patients admitted to Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital in South Africa over a 5-year period (2001-2005), published in the African Journal of Psychiatry in 2010. On obtaining his Master of Medicine in Psychiatry (MMed-Psych) degree in 2009 from the University of Pretoria, he ventured into corporate as a clinical research physician at the South African affiliate of Eli Lilly (Pty)Ltd. His role exposed him to the regional and global psychiatric community allowing him to engage thought leaders thereby contributing to the enhancement of his knowledge in the field, clinical research skills and fostered a passion for sharing medical information. Nai’m has chaired, facilitated and contributed to multiple round table discussions, CME presentations, advisory boards (Eli Lilly, Adcock, Jansen) and conferences with audiences consisting of his peers, general practitioners, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers and the public. While at Lily, he was invited as a keynote speaker to the 2nd Annual Scientific Conference held by the Kenya Psychiatric Association in 2010.

In 2011 Nai’m left corporate to return to his passion of clinical work, establishing two hospital-based practices at the Life Healthcare facilities in Fourways, Johannesburg. Over a period of nine years, he gained invaluable experience treating a patient base of approximately five thousand; performing consultation-liaison, acute admission and outpatient psychiatric work contributing to his clinical comfort in managing neuropsychiatric conditions, mood and anxiety disorders, substance related disorders, personality distortions, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, pervasive developmental disorders and psychotic disorders. He gradually shifted his clinical outlook viewing all health conditions including mental health to be inherently a psycho-neuro-endocrinological/immunological disorder enhancing his approach to patient management moving away from a focus on diagnostic confirmation, formulary-guided medication and prescriptive psychotherapeutic modality intervention, to viewing patients holistically.

This resulted in his move to his current clinical position in 2020, practicing as an integrative psychiatrist, Nai’m works to empower individuals in their journey to self-actualization, utilizing a narrative that combines his knowledge and experience in psychiatry and psychology to unravel emotional logic, incorporating conventional medication, homeopathic and nutraceutical products, nutritional and exercise guidance, mindfulness meditation, breathwork and eclectic psychotherapy. Nai’m is a co-founder of Equanimity wellness retreat founded with two of South Africa’s eminent clinicians, thereby integrating approximately 40 years of combined experience in mental health with best practices in plant medicine-assisted therapy.
