I was raised in a small wheat farming town in Eastern Washington and have always thought of myself as a country girl. I moved to Portland in the early 1980s to pursue art. During those years I met my first husband, had babies and became a midwife. As I began attending births, I was fascinated by the profound transformation that women and families go through in the course of that process. And each time, completely uniquely. Being a witness to those awe inspiring miracles was a the blessing of lifetime. During that time I also acquired a family nurse practitioner certificate and began providing holistic primary care for both midwifery clients and family practice patients. Over time I could see how the current healthcare system was not serving patients OR providers well. I learned that the rate of depression and anxiety in both the general population and among healthcare providers had skyrocketed. What I was seeing in clinical practice was alarming, and that western medicine could offer no reliable solutions. We also approached patients as compartmentalized organisms, like cars, as if the part I happen to be treating today isn’t connected the whole being.
So when I heard about psilocybin therapy as a remedy for so many of the troubling mental, emotional and spiritual challenges of our time, I was stunned to see the research. That Psilocybin could actually help the brain to ‘rewire’ itself, to form new neural pathways and connections was absolutely compelling. So, I decided to look into becoming a Psilocybin Assisted Therapist, and when I did I immediately recognized the similarities between psilocybin assistance, and midwifery. Or I should say, the similarities between psilocybin therapy and birth. From the moment that one ‘conceives’ of the idea and makes the decision to pursue this medicine, things begin to move and change in their life. Things rise to the surface, rememberings, old knowings. Often times difficult things, pain, past hurts, questions. Relationships start to shift, and often open. New doors begin to open. It is almost………..… magic.
I am so excited to have embarked on this new dimension of midwifery, to once again have the sacred opportunity to be a witness to what is for some, a spiritually transformative process, and the movement of spirit, and life which is so needed today. My three plus decades of spiritual practice has helped me to deepen my listening skills, and become more sensitive to the energies of those in need. I strive to bring the highest quality of attention to each client interaction. I wish for this medicine to be available to everyone who wishes or needs it. And I am all in for this next chapter: I am calling it, Psychedelic Midwifery.
