The Zen Center is located in the Southern Black Forest, right in the corner between France, Switzerland, and Germany. It is a beautiful area to hike in the summer and a renowned area for cross-county skying in the winter. On a sunny day, you can get a view of the Swiss Alps. Freiburg (Germany) is about one hour drive North of us, Basel (Switzerland) about one hour South, and Strasbourg (France) about one hour West.

Mission & Vision

The Buddhist Study Center Johanneshof-Quellenweg is a Zen Buddhist Practice Center, offering a (hopefully) realizational space, dedicated to the practice and enactment of wisdom and compassion. We practice still seated meditation every morning and evening.

Johanneshof-Quellenweg was founded by Zentatsu Baker Roshi, the Dharma Heir of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, in 1996. Baker Roshi is the Abbot and Head Teacher at Johanneshof-Quellenweg.

We offer more than 40 retreats each year: Zen seminars for beginners and experienced practitioners, Sesshins (7 day intensive meditation retreats), work practice weeks, seminars for young people and for families, and a 90-day Practice Period from September through December. We also offer seminars exploring the relationship between psychological aspects of Zen practice; seminars in the field of body work (specifically, how to develop our bodily minds in relationship to zazen practice); Zen calligraphy; and mindful communication.
