Born in Cecilia Cocha, along the Caucaya River, Taita Oliberto is a traditional healer and authority figure within the Kichwa community of the Amazon. Hailing from a lineage of wise elders, leaders, and taitas, his connection to plant wisdom and cosmology began in his earliest days under the guidance of his father, who held the esteemed role of taita within the community.
His lineage is nothing short of remarkable: a descendant of a family of ancestral doctors and renowned healers, Taita Oliberto is connected to the Huitotos Muruy culture through his father, the respected Taita curaca Isaias Muñoz Caimito. On the maternal side, his roots extend to the Kichwa people of the Napo River region in Ecuador, with his mother, Margarita Macanilla, descending from the ancient Inca civilizations. This dual heritage positions him as a true heir to two great Amazonian cultures: Muruy-Kichwa.
From a young age, Taita Oliberto has been initiated into the mysteries of nature and spiritual life, particularly through the sacred Ayahuasca (Yagé) medicine. He absorbed the ancestral knowledge passed down by his father, honing skills in plant medicine and embracing the worldview of his people. This deep immersion in natural and spiritual medicine has allowed him to understand and preserve the wisdom passed down by his ancestors.
Over time, he assumed the mantle of taita and community leader, continuing the vital work of preserving and disseminating the teachings of his forebears, making him the guardian of the sacred Yagé ceremony and ancient healing chants.
As a prominent figure within the APKAC (Association of Indigenous Councils and Traditional Authorities of the Department of Amazonas), Taita Oliberto leads various initiatives aimed at safeguarding the culture and territory of his people. His dedication to cultural preservation and ancestral knowledge has elevated him to a position of prominence, not only within his community but also regionally and nationally.
Today, Taita Oliberto is recognized as a leading representative of his people, their worldview, and Amazonian traditional medicine. His brother, Taita Isaías Muñoz Macanilla, leads the 19 Kichwa communities of the Colombian Amazon, working closely together to strengthen cultural identity and promote the preservation of ancestral traditions.
