Why study with them?
Henry Fersko-Weiss, LCSW has been at the forefront of the contemporary end-of-life doula movement for over 20 years. He created the first fully developed end-of-life doula program at a hospice in the U.S. in 2003. He has served hundreds of dying people and their loved ones; created death doula programs at hospices, hospitals, and long-term care facilities, and taught thousands of people to serve at the bedside of the dying. Henry's highly regarded book on death doula work: Finding Peace at the End of Life, was published in 2017 and reprinted in 2020.
Henry is also a Zen Buddhist Sensei in the Empty Bowl Zendo community in Morristown, NJ. Over a period of 50 years, he has studied with a number of well-known Zen teachers, including Eido Shimano Roshi, Bernie Glassman Roshi and Sandra Jishu Holmes Roshi, among others. Henry spent two years at Dai Bosatsu Monastery in the mid-1970s. He received transmission, or permission to teach, from Ray Ruzan Cicetti Roshi in 2024 as his second Dharma successor, and received the Dharma name Myoshin. Henry continues to teach at Empty Bowl Zendo.
