About Temple of the Way of Light

Mission & Vision

The Temple of the Way of Light is a pioneering healing center in the Peruvian Amazon that has facilitated safe ayahuasca healing retreats for thousands of guests from more than 30 countries since our foundation in March 2007. Offering a synthesis of ancient Shipibo healing traditions and modern and Eastern integrative practices, the Temple is proud to be known as the safest and one of the most respected and long-established plant-spirit shamanism centers in the Amazon Rainforest.

All our ayahuasca healing retreats feature a balance of highly experienced female and male healers (Onanya) from the indigenous Shipibo tribe. This incredible team of healers represents over 250 years of experience practicing the ancient art of ayahuasca shamanism. They are supported by our highly trained and knowledgeable Western facilitators, who act as a critical cultural bridge between the healers and our guests.

The Temple’s ayahuasca healing retreats are united by an unwavering focus on compassion and safety. We are constantly striving to offer the safest container for our guests while they move through their ayahuasca journey. This level of care extends to before, during and after the retreat.

BEFORE: We apply some of the most stringent health and safety protocols in the Amazon, including in-depth medical screening. Guests also receive detailed guidance on how to prepare for healing with ayahuasca and the initiation of a long-term journey of self-discovery, spiritual awakening and transformation.

DURING: The Temple nourishes a spiritual practice based on the exercise of love and compassion. Put simply, we care deeply about our guests. We have embedded this approach by establishing a high ratio of staff to guests, which ensures an exceptional level of service and individual attention.

AFTER: We view the ayahuasca experience as a continuum. We are currently in the process of developing a new and comprehensive 3-month aftercare program to be offered for free to all guests. The aim of our Continuing Care Program is to support our guests with integration of the healing that is experienced after ayahuasca retreats at the Temple. This already includes a private Facebook integration group for the Temple community and a team of integration guides and a network of affiliated therapists, and coming soon, weekly emails offering a road-map for integration over a 3-month period and a tool-kit of meditations, exercises, practices, resources, and general advice.

The Temple recognizes our ayahuasca healing retreats as sacred work and is dedicated to providing the optimum conditions for profound, long-term healing. Through ayahuasca, our retreats move us into right relationship with ourselves and others. By bringing clarity to where and how we must change – and treating the psycho-spiritual and emotional imbalances that impede change – ayahuasca and the Temple’s Shipibo healers help guests toward a healthier, more integral, and joy-filled life.

Meals

Menu Types

One of the most important aspects of working with ayahuasca is adhering to an honored tradition of following a special diet in order to prepare not just the body, but also the mind and soul to incorporate the healing energy of ayahuasca. This diet also shows the spirit of ayahuasca your intention, and is a test of discipline and commitment. The central aspects of the diet we follow at the Temple are common to the teachings of all ayahuasquero/as across the Peruvian Amazon. The food at the Temple is prepared by our wonderful cooks who provide well rounded, healthy, and plentiful meals throughout your stay whilst adhering to the essential restrictions.

Getting Here

Directions

**Please do not book flights or make any travel arrangements until your registration and medical information has been reviewed and you have been approved to attend a retreat.** In order to come to the Temple you would need to fly into Iquitos International Airport. We recommend booking your flights for one day before and after the start and end date of your retreat to first allow yourself time to acclimatize to the environment and then allow yourself ample travel time and time to reintegrate into the “mainstream” world once the workshop has ended. Each retreat group will be picked up on the first morning of the retreat at a designated pickup location in central Iquitos by one of our staff members and then travel to the Temple together from there. The group will be brought back into Iquitos after breakfast on the last morning of the retreat and will arrive in town by early afternoon (usually 2pm at the latest). The price of a Temple retreat includes transportation from the group pickup place in Iquitos to the Temple on the first morning of the retreat and transportation back to Iquitos on the last morning of the retreat. The price does not include any flights, hotel costs, or transportation to the group pickup on the first morning.

Life-changing
My recent 12 day retreat in February at the Temple of the Way of Light was life-changing. The facilitators and indigenous Shipibo healers provided a rigorous and comprehensive framework for exploring the potential of plant medicines in healing both our personal and collective traumas. The jungle was a magnificent setting for the ceremonies; the healers offered poignant, heartfelt medicine songs; and the staff were constantly available to respond to our needs. Lodging and food were both excellent. Moreover, the retreat does not end when you leave the Temple. A well-supported online programme helps integrate the experience into your daily life during the weeks that follow your return home. — Stephen Batchelor

The temple is the ‘real deal’
I have 13 years of sobriety and was nervous coming into this retreat doing ayahuaska. I can say, it was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. The facility is beautiful, humble, and stays as true to the tradition as possible. The food is amazing. As a man processing childhood trauma, I was pretty nervous going in. The facilitators are amazing. Rueben helped me stay grounded a lot during my experience. Hamme showed be compassion and gentle stability. Sasha was a great leader and was always safe and present. Debbie showed it was okay to ask for help and met me with love when I was struggling. Kirstie was a very good energy and provided great yoga sessions. All the facilitators had their own experience and energy to bring to the table and all I had to do was be open and willing to trust the process. The healers are also very well practiced in the shapibo tradition. As someone who was somewhat skeptical going in, this again - one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Would definitely recommend.

Life-changing in every way
I had an absolutely profound and life-changing experience at the Temple of the Way of Light. From the moment I arrived, it felt like a place guided by something far greater than ordinary human effort.
At times, it genuinely felt as though the Temple was run by the divine and administered by people, that is how magical and deeply held the experience was. The facilitators, shamans/healers, and staff create an environment that is safe, respectful, and full of wisdom, allowing you to fully surrender to the process knowing you are supported on every level.
What I experienced here goes beyond words. It felt as if my soul’s battery had been completely recharged. I left with a renewed joy for life, clarity, and a deep sense of gratitude and connection, both to myself, to my fellow humans and to something greater.
This is not just a retreat; it is a sacred space for real healing and transformation. I am deeply grateful to everyone who made this journey possible, and I will carry what I received here for the rest of my life.

TOTWOL is Beautifully Orchestrated
This incredible shamanic healing centre is situated in in the heart of the Amazon Jungle. Not only is the set and setting perfect for the deep healing work that comes from working with Ayahuasca and the Curanderos present, but the Temple of The Way of Light is beautifully orchestrated and the retreats are perfectly created. The Facilitators are second to none, they create a safe container for whatever arises for each participant. Particular thanks and special mention to Debi who is doing some excellent facilitation work at TOTWOL. I've witnessed beautiful revelations and people held so well in their processes. I've experienced personal transformation and healing in both my visits to the Temple. I attended both the Deep Immersion in 2019 and the Health Practitioner retreat in 2025. I consider this kind of work to be vital for those that feel called. We are lucky to have this kind of facility available and I believe that each of us taking responsibility to heal from trauma has the power to change the world.

Working with Ayahuasca for real
In today’s world with the popularization of ayahuasca, there are many places to go and people who serve the medicine. I two was one of those people who had.”taken” ayahuasca prior to my experience at The Temple of the Way of Light, And while that experience was helpful and beautiful in many ways, it in no way can compare to “working with” Ayahuasca and its true tradition and form, with authentic Maestros from a long lineage of Maestros who have spent decades developing their capacities. I also have met other people and even friends who have “taken” Ayahuasca outside of a lineage and environment of integrity and deep care that exist at TOTWOL; and both for myself and those people it seems to have been more of a “peak experience” versus true healing and expansion of consciousness. If you are considering real healing and personal growth, please be aware of places that are mainly focused on serving you ayahuasca and I strongly consider going to TOTWOL to “work with” ayahuasca with integrity, care, safety, and with Maestros who can heal with the Ikaros - which are as essential, if not more than the medicine alone for true healing and expansion of your awareness over your lifetime versus a peak experience. May you be well and filled with loving kindness…
