About Jakon Rate

Mission & Vision

Jakon Rate is a plant medicine education center and a school of living knowledge. Unlike many centers in the Amazon and beyond, we are not a foreign-owned, for-profit business. We are a Shipibo-owned non-profit institute of education that exists to protect, transmit, and embody a specific spiritual, cultural, and familial lineage rooted in the Shipibo‑Konibo tradition. Our programming is distinct in how we integrate plant medicine with cultural education and traditional practice. We understand that plant medicine and the cultures from which these traditions arise are inseparable, so our Payanti retreats intentionally weave ceremonies together with Shipibo-Konibo cultural teachings and learning. We also offer traditional masterplant diets on our land—please visit our website if interested!

Master Plant Dieta with integrity, care, authenticity, and a deep connection to the plants
I have dieted with other Shipibo families in the Amazon, and I can say without hesitation that my time at Jakon Rate fundamentally changed my relationship with the plants and with the dieta (samá) path itself.

From my very first samá with Manuela, and through my ongoing studies with Manuela, Robertina, and Delia, I have felt my connection to Shipibo plant medicine deepen in ways I could never have imagined. The wisdom carried by the grandmothers is profound. Their songs, guidance, discipline, and care reflect a lineage that is alive, intact, and deeply rooted in integrity. Learning from these women is now the foundation of my spiritual growth and the work I carry forward.

What sets Jakon Rate apart from other Shipibo plant medicine centers is the rare balance they hold between strong, attentive support for students from around the world and the depth and authenticity of a truly traditional Shipibo dieta. The samá experience is not diluted or commercialized; it is respected.

The facilities are tended with great care and intention. The land is private and safe. The water is delicious, potable water from a deep well on the property. The tambos are spacious and well-maintained. The forest trails are beautiful, clean paths through the land. The ceremonial maloka is the most beautiful ceremonial space I have ever experienced. The ceremonies themselves are incredibly powerful. The grandmothers are true maestras and encourage each student to learn through singing. In this way, each ceremony and each samá becomes deeply personal, helping to unlock one’s potential and relationship with the plants and with Shipibo plant technology.

Above all, what I appreciate most about Jakon Rate is their integrity. This is not a retreat center. It is an authentic healing and educational center grounded in Shipibo values, ancestral knowledge, and reciprocity with the plants and the land. For anyone seeking an authentic Shipibo dieta in Peru, guided by elders and grandmothers who truly embody this tradition, Jakon Rate is extraordinary.

I am deeply grateful to this community and carry their teachings with me every day.

Grounded work, illuminated teachings
A powerful location where the staff, facilitators, and indigenous Shipibo grandmothers invite you in to the ancient tradition of sama, or plant diet. I was supported through the natural challenges of the process and learned an incredible amount about the people, tradition, medicines, and jungle itself. There are lots of centers out there to choose from. I come to Jakon Rate for the good simplicity and high integrity of everyone involved. Irake yoxanbo!
