Rev. Mark S. Burrows, Ph.D., is much sought-after as a retreat leader and speaker on spirituality and mysticism, poetry and the arts. In 2021, he founded and continues to lead a popular online program, “the Julian Circle,” that encourages participants to live into the wholistic wisdom of Julian’s “showings.” A teacher, scholar and award-winning poet and translator of German poetry, his recent books include Meister Eckhart’s Book of Darkness and Light and You Are the Future: Living the Questions with Rainer Maria Rilke (2024). Details of this retreat
This retreat introduces poems written later in life by a gathering of contemporary poets. They are sages who invite us into more spacious ways of living than we might otherwise imagine. Their vision invites us into “an energetic space that begets energetic space” (J. Winterson). Their gifts of wisdom, borne of long experience and heartful living, invite us to imagine that even the difficult seasons of life can become openings to an unexpected harvest. We’ll discover poems together that gesture toward our ripening and fruition. They beckon us to envision new ways of seeing, encouraging us—with the poet Rilke—to live into “a second life, timeless and wide.” Poets to be explored include Mary Oliver, W. S. Merwin, Denise Levertov, Stanley Kunitz, and Jane Hirshfield, among others.

Accommodation
Siena Retreat Center has 67 private bedrooms with private in-room bath facilities. Linens and towels are provided and guests have access to a free, fully-stocked guest laundry. We ask that silence be kept on bedroom floors. There are rooms with one twin bed, two twin beds and with queen-size beds. Only one person is assigned to a room unless you specifically request to share. Siena Retreat Center has elevator access to all floors and ADA accessible rooms are available upon request. Service animals are accepted.
