This foundational course, "Introduction to Buddhist Philosophy," invites students to explore the rich tapestry of the Buddhist philosophical tradition. Designed for both new and seasoned practitioners, this course aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the philosophical landscape within early Indian Buddhism and the subsequent developments in Tibetan schools of thought.
Course Objectives:

Broad Overview: Gain an in-depth understanding of the diverse schools of thought that have shaped Buddhist philosophy over the centuries.
Foundational Knowledge: Build a solid foundation for further study and practice by exploring the historical contexts, key concepts, and philosophical debates that have contributed to the evolution of Buddhist thought and practice.
Critical Skills: Develop the ability to engage with complex philosophical ideas through the lenses of history, logic, and reason, enhancing both personal practice and intellectual inquiry.

Key Topics:

Historical Context: Trace the origins and evolution of early Indian Buddhist schools, understanding the historical and cultural factors that led to their development.
Philosophical Systems: Explore the main systems of thought within Buddhism, including:

Abhidharma: Learn the foundational elements of Buddhist philosophy that were taught during the First Turning of the Wheel of Dharma. 
Buddhist Logic: Learn how Buddhist scholars used logic and reasoning to clarify their views and advance their understanding of the Dharma.
Cittamatra (Mind-Only School): Learn about the core teachings of this early Mahayana school that emerged from the works of Asanga. 
Madhyamaka (Middle Way): Learn about the profound teachings on emptiness that emerged based on the works of Nagarjuna and later masters.

This course emphasizes the significance of philosophical study in Buddhist practice, highlighting how a deeper understanding of these teachings can enrich one's spiritual path. Course Format:

Weekly Course Schedule
This course will be three months long with 60 minute lectures for three weeks out of every month. Student study groups will meet weekly for additional questions and discussion. 

Starting June 8 through August 24

Course Fee: $300, which includes full access to all live and recorded lectures and the course materials.
