In Asia, the term tantra refers to a particular type of teaching within the Vedic, Hindu and Buddhist traditions. In the Western world, tantra is often misinterpreted and confused for sacred sexuality. ‘Tantra’ is a Sanskrit word which means ‘woven together’. Tantric teachings are esoteric and most teachings are passed on through direct transmission from teacher to student. Tantra aims to ‘weave’ together different yoga practices and styles of teaching in order to connect with the world around us. Tantra focuses on continuity of awareness in everyday life, and the teaching that all of life can be sacred when imbued with that intention.

Tantra yoga works with the five bodies: the physical, the energetic, mental/emotional, wisdom, and the bliss body by combining asana, mantra, mudra and work with the energetic centers of the body called the Chakras. Though many Wisdom Traditions seek to transcend the limitations of the physical experience, Tantra seeks to empower the practitioner to fully inhabit the physical experience and use it as a gateway to the sacred realms of Shakti awakening and enlightenment.

There are various centers around the globe that have structured their courses, workshops and events around Tantra. They combine different types of yoga with breathwork and guided meditation along with chakra balancing to make for a powerful and potentially deeply insightful and healing experience. Retreats may be catered to singles or couples, depending on the intention of the work.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

It would my first vacation in the mountains. I think getting away and beginning a new routine would be good for me and a friend. Dianne
