About this Retreat
Mark Henderson is a student of Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche. Since 1975, Mark has assisted Tarthang Rinpoche in the original construction of the Odiyan Retreat Center, as well as the construction of the Odiyan Vajra Temple. In addition, Mark has participated in the Nyingma Monlam Chenmo in Bodh Gaya, India, seven times. For twenty years Mark played an instrumental role in Rinpoche’s creation of over 100,000 handheld prayer wheels for distribution to the Nyingma Sangha at Bodh Gaya, as well as sacred empowerments and large prayer wheels for Odiyan. These include the sacred prayer wheels installed at the Vajra Temple, Cintamani Temple, Vairochana Garden, and the monumental and historic Walking Mandala of Odiyan. In his professional life, Mark was a practicing attorney for 20 years, recognized by the California State Bar as a certified specialist in Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Law. In the nonprofit sector, he served as both a Board Director and as an Executive Director of a community organization serving the elderly in Davis, California. After considerable training, Mark presently teaches classes in Tibetan Language, Tibetan Chanting, and Buddhist Studies at the Nyingma Institute in Berkeley, California. He thoroughly enjoys and adores his two children and one grandchild.
Details of this retreat
For those looking to deepen their Tibetan Buddhist practice, we welcome you to this special retreat dedicated to the Buddha.
The centerpiece of this retreat is a traditional practice of Buddha Shakyamuni. This practice was composed by one of the greatest masters of the Nyingma lineage, Kunkhyen Jamgon Mipham Namgyal Gyatso, known frequently as Lama Mipham. The practice focuses on reciting the sacred names and mantra of Buddha Shakyamuni, as well as visualizing the radiance of Shakyamuni's golden form filling all of space and fulfilling the needs of all sentient beings. Although the original Tibetan will be made available, the retreat will be conducted entirely in English. Retreatants will also receive and practice together meditation instructions composed for Westerners by Tarthang Rinpoche, as well as Kum Nye Tibetan Yoga practices specifically selected to complement the retreat program. Tarthang Rinpoche has specifically approved Mark Henderson to present this Ratna Ling retreat based on this sacred and beloved text composed by Lama Mipham.
The retreat leader, Mark Henderson, received the traditional lineage transmission (or lung) for Lama Mipham's text from Ven. Tulku Tenzin Gyatso, one of the head lamas of Serta Larung Gar, Tibet, the largest community of Buddhist practitioners in the world.
