Yoga Nidra: Enlightened Sleep

Details of this retreat
It's important to know that yoga nidra is not one thing. Too often it has been reduced to a single template. In this traditional approach, it has five: healing, clarity, resolve, transformation, and awakening. And rather than one level of depth, it can ascend through four.
Our exploration draws on two traditions. Tantra is the living lineage this training is rooted in — it provides the principles of the practice, along with the templates and maps this retreat draws from. The other is Vedanta, by way of the Mandukya Upanishad, one of the few texts to speak directly to yoga nidra as turiya — the ground from which waking, dreaming, and deep sleep arise.
During our time together, each day will weave multiple guided yoga nidra practices, theory, reflection, and discussion into a progressive arc — from the foundations of the practice to its most subtle dimensions. The retreat offers the rare gift of entering these teachings repeatedly, so that what you first grasp intellectually becomes something you know directly. You'll learn how skillful preparation of body, breath, and mind opens the door to deeper rest and awareness, how each of the five templates serves a different aim, and how to move past relaxation into the terrain where yoga nidra becomes a genuine catalyst for healing, insight, and transformation. From there it will become clear why you have to experience yoga nidra's highest states to fully understand it — and why embodying those states is what allows you to transmit it.
Menla itself is part of the teaching. Contemplative practice has been rooted in this ground for decades. It's here, in the mountains and the rhythm of the place itself. Its stillness will serve to lift our practice and quietly contribute to the clarity and freedom yoga nidra reveals.
This immersion welcomes you wherever you're starting. Some of you are new to yoga nidra. Some have practiced it for years. Others are ready to teach.
This course also serves as the foundation for certification for those called to guide others. What you'll leave with isn't more information about yoga nidra. It's a deeper capacity to enter the state itself, to work with intention across all five aims, and — if you teach — to guide others there from direct experience rather than a script.

Overall, I found the property and the experience to be wonderful. All the staff are truly loving and caring. Thank you!
A wonderful week
Amazingly tranquil space for a retreat with great amenities
The lecture hall is such a great space and the audio / visual people do such an amazing job of stage managing the room with multiple cameras and mics that it makes for a great educational tool to be able to go back to such a well produced recording after. The room is large, with comfortable seating and environment.
The food in the dining hall in the Main Inn building is vegetarian and is awesome, even for omnivores like myself - didn't miss the meat at all for the week.
My room this time was in the same building as the lecture hall and was very nicely done and comfortable with an armoire, queen bed, desk and chair. My previous room had a sink and mirror, this one did not. But that was fine. Previous room in another building shared a bathroom with one other room, this one shared a bathroom with 10 other rooms, but it was a multi person bathroom with two shower stalls, two sinks and one toilet stall for men. So with a mix of genders in the rooms, you only share with about half the rooms. It worked out well. Finally, I used the recommended car service to go to and from the resort and it worked out great. The only issue with that is that the roads around campus are gravel and so if you get dropped at the Inn and walk to the Convention Center like I did with a roller bag, that can be a longish, bumpy walk while most people would be driving. No biggie, just something to keep in mind.
The spa is also amazing. The retreat I was at gave you ample free time to explore the resort and surrounding areas for hikes, etc. I got two awesome massages and the steam room and sauna in the men's room were very nice along with an automated shower that had several massage settings to choose from as well.
All in all, a great educational experience at Menla with one of my favorite Buddhist teachers, with great accommodations, great food, and great people in a beautiful setting in the Catskill Mountains of New York.
